MORE ABOUT THE GCWS

Founder, Marilyn Bishop, lead the inital GCWS meeting in 2002, with a specific mission --- to encourage painters at all skill levels and to promote interest, appreciation, and enjoyment of watermedia.

Now over 100 members strong, the GCWS meets on the first Wednesday of each month for a very short business meeting, followed immediately by a program, usually featuring a special speaker or artist.

The meetings vary from month to month with a variety of guests, many presenting unique and informative 'demos' to watch. One of the main goals is to further educate the members in the fascinating and challenging field of watercolor.

The membership offers a wide expanse of art experience and abilities, including novice artists, some just beginning in watercolor, as well as many experienced painters and professional artists. GCWS members are eager to share and help each other grow.

A diverse group from in and around Cincinnati, they travel from Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, bringing a variety of interests to the meetings. Each year, they participate in the annual art show, held at Evergreen Retirement Center in Wyoming, Ohio, in May and early June.

Because one of the main goals is art education, every spring an art scholarship is awarded to a deserving high school senior who will be furthering his or her art education. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of portfolio presentation.

One of the helpful things offered at the meetings is a voluntary critique of members' work. Any unframed watermedia work can be presented for a beneficial critique, usually held immediately after the program.

A special painting time in the afternoon is often offered for people who want to stay to paint, with various instructors teaching lessons for a small fee per person.
